ARCHAEOLOGY OF FURNITURE: DRAWINGS ON GIOTTO

Gallery of Functional Art, Los Angeles and Gagosian-Castelli Gallery, New York

Giotto lived seven hundred years ago, from 1267 to 1337. His work is revolutionary in the depiction of the human figure. Of equal interest to us is his depiction of buildings and furniture. Giotto's medieval city of a composition of multicolored buildings, not the monochrome present reality. The buildings and furniture are simple in form, but are powerfully evocative. They often seem like people, and are active in the telling of stories.

In 'Drawings on Giotto', we have made three-dimensional drawings of some furniture that exists in the reality of Giotto's paintings. Our furniture, then is a depiction of another reality. The pieces can be seen, almost by accident, as furniture to be used. We imagine their use by both the body and the mind in ways other than those proscribed by their names.
