In the design for the Headquarters for the West Coast Landmark of the Music Business- The Bernie Grundman Mastering Studio, lead designers Robert Mangurian and Mary-Ann Ray worked closely with the owners Bernie and Claire to reach a design solution to fit their demanding requirements for an atmosphere that both functions impeccably as a set of Mastering Studios but that also provided the visiting artists/musicians with a comfortable ‘hang-out’ space. Each Studio has an accompanying Lounge we call the ‘Porches’. The studio also has it’s own Espresso Bar- a 20 foot long ebony wood counter that functions as a central crossroads for conversation. Clever design solutions to keep the project on it’s strict budget are the glowing light fixture soffits that cover mechanical equipment, translucent colored acrylic rooflets to obtain spatial difference, and the use of inexpensive auto upholstery in the Lounge seating!
