RAISE-UP HOUSE

West Los Angeles, California
Client: Andrea Luria and Zachery Feuer
Lead Designers:
Robert Mangurian, Mary-Ann Ray

This project for a house is an economical venture that makes big volumes and simple spaces for living in and around. The economy of construction and detailing was a value shared by the client and the architect, and led to a simplicity and clean austerity of form inspired by some American and Californian traditions such as Schindler's and Irving Gill's houses, Shaker interiors, and Wright's Usonian houses. The simple first move for the house was to cut the existing 1,000 sq.ft. house from its foundations and raise it 15' in the air, leaving a large volume for the new space of the family. Color in the Raise-Up House is seen as a material, and was used to make the house luminous.
